URBANE CHOICES, Inc.
Urbane
Choices is headed by Michael Markstahler. For many years
Michael Markstahler has been known in the community as a pioneer
in both the preservation of older neighborhoods and providing unique
and individualized residential lifestyle choices. His firm, RDI,
is known as the premier renovations company in the county. The name
Markstahler has been associated in Baden, Germany with master building,
furniture making, and contracting since the 1600s. The first Markstahler
arrived in America in 1774. Since that time it has continued to
be a family profession on this side of the Atlantic.
Michael served for four terms as the chair of the City of Champaign
Plan Commission. He has nearly two decades of public service in
a variety of citizen commissions and task forces dealing with the
planning needs of both the City of Champaign and Champaign County.
From this experience he brings a unique experience and appreciation
for urban renaissance. During his long involvement with the National
Association of HomeBuilders and especially its Commercial Builders
Council he traveled extensively around the country meeting with
developers actively participating in the urban renaissance of such
cities as New York, Seattle, Phoenix, Houston, Miami and St. Louis.
He has been waiting for when the time was right to help bring sophistication
to residential living opportunities to Champaign-Urbana.

Architecture by
Russell A. Dankert & Associates
In the marrow of every design person, there lies a usually unrequited
desire to make the surrounding of the Cite Centre attractive to
a variety of occupants. It is into this opportunity that we were
invited to be a part of the design team that is going to address
this need to restore the area to a multi-user fabric. This team
is now focusing on the Uptown On Columbia project, that aims at
attracting an upscale clientele, to condominium ownership. From
that, it is our belief that the next natural step is the return
of service businesses to the City Centre.
RADA has a long history of residential design. Because we
believe that every client, with no matter as to the size of the
project, deserves competent architectural services, we have been
involved with a wide range of residential projects, in scope and
location. Our clients also include multi-family developers, both
corporate and individual. Over the years, we have designed in excess
of 4,000 living units, both rental and condominium style. From that
experience base we look forward to helping create the kind of urban
landscape that is both usable and attractive.

City
of Champaign
The City of Champaign has a forward thinking philosophy and a can
do attitude towards the recreation of the downtown urban environment
from an outdated traditional retail center to an exciting lifestyle
choice. Both the City Council and the City staff have shown tremendous
support and encouragement in all aspects of our efforts to make Uptown
On Columbia a reality. They are a true team member.
As Bruce Knight the director of the Champaigns planning department
states,
"In recent years, a strong part of the resurgence of downtown
Champaign has been the addition of unique living spaces above the
ground floor of new businesses. These residential units, in conjunction
with the office and entertainment uses located downtown have created
a thriving 24-hour center. The Uptown On Columbia project marks an
exciting new direction for downtown development in the City of Champaign.
This project is the first residential development on the north of
downtown. We believe that the result of the new investment in this
diverse neighborhood will be to create our own, smaller scale, urban
neighborhood comparable to SoHo in New York and the South Loop in
Chicago. This neighborhood will not only have its own unique attributes
and character, but is within walking distance of downtown."
If you have any questions about the future of downtown, or of the
neighborhood around the Uptown project, please feel free to give the
Planning Department a call at 403-8800. |
