More information

AROMA CAFE - from the News Gazette Online - Aroma Cafe, just opened April 1. Aroma Cafe is differentiating itself with a Latin theme in decor, music and menu. The Wellses, both of whom formerly worked in the technology industry, decorated Aroma Cafe in bright blues and yellows, and added a cozy fireplace and an outdoor patio in back. They also added a mural with a scene from Puerto Plata, the Dominican Republic town where Lissette Wells once lived, and they're selling cigars-though more for the Latin flair it lends than for actual use inside their nonsmoking establishment. The Wellses said they intended to be mostly a coffeehouse serving food at lunchtime, but they're already planning to expand the food menu in the evenings to accommodate customer demand. They serve, in addition to pastries, bagels, coffees and other beverages, an assortment of wrap sandwiches on flat bread, classic Cuban sandwiches and salads. And, in keeping with Lissette Wells' heritage, their menu also offers such items as cafe con leche, a sweetened coffee with milk served with bread on the side for dunking, and cafecito, a shot of sweetened espresso.

BARFLY - from Champaign County Visitor's Guide - hours: 3pm to 1am Mon - Sun No food, live DJ, 2000 sq. ft. beer garden, and a wide selection of draft and bottled beer, cocktails and frozen drinks. New York style ultra-lounge.

BOLTINI'S - from Champaign County Visitor'sGuide - Boltini has quickly become de rigueur for downtown folks. Intimate seating and a beautiful interior soothe you as you peruse the most well-chosen list of liquor in town. DJs every night of the week and a well-trained, informed staff. Light Fare available. Outside Seating.

BRASS RAIL- from the Equinox web site - The Brass Rail is a friendly, small club.  No stage.  Instruments are set up at one end of the bar on the floor.  Keeps the band down close to the crowd, unlike when they're up on a higher stage.  Makes for an interesting show where everyone gets a feeling of being right in there with the band.

CAFE KOPI- from Champaign County Visitor's Guide - Have a drink, coffee or sip some tea at Cafe Kopi - Downtown's favorite place to see and be seen. Delicious coffee, espresso, sandwiches and salads are all served quickly and with little fuss. Outside tables available.

CHESTER STREET- from Champaign County Visitor'sGuide - Champaign's premier dance and video nightclub. Live D.J.'s seven nights a week playing the hottest dance music and videos. Featuring fog, snow and confetti over the dance floor. High tech DMX intelligent lighting with 3 floors and 4 bars. Chester Street is Champaign's largest night club.

COWBOY MONKEY- from The Buzz -The interior design of Cowboy Monkey is more sophisticated than the Pig, yet it still has a casual feel, and the new sound system rocks, Nan Holda, freelance journalist and founder of the Champaign Area Roots Music Association (CARMA) said.“ I think the owners did a great job of upgrading the place while creating a laid-back atmosphere that is consistent with the old venue.”Ê The atmosphere was filled with excitement and energy, as though those inside knew that they were a part of something special; a rebirth of the musical spirit that was lost when the Blind Pig closed. The Blind Pig was a favorite nightspot in town and when it closed we really experienced the loss, said Jenny Southlynn, Arts and Entertainment editor of the now defunct CU Cityview and the soon to be published, The Paper. "The Cowboy Monkey was definitely happening. It was The Pig only cleaner and better. The place was crowed with a whole range of people from old timers like myself to the young and the beautiful.Ó

ESQUIRE- From the Champaign County Visitor's Guide - Free peanuts - shells on the floor. Stiff drinks, cold beer and hot food. Seven TV's. Occasional live music, never a cover. Outdoor patio. Friendly staff.

FARREN'S- from Champaign County Visitor's Guide - Caroline Farren puts together a spectacular list of daily specials - often offering mouthwatering seafood items usually hard to come by in Champaign-Urbana. Farren's does a brisk lunch business (service is quick and lively) and offers a full-service bar.

HIGHDIVE- from Champaign County Visitor's Guide - Highdive features live entertainment six nights a week with a full-service bar including 24 different beers on tap. On weekends enjoy the hottest dance music from area DJs in Champaign's "Best Dance Club" (as voted in '00 and '01 by the readers of The Octopus, now CU City View).

HINODE- from Sixth Street Journal - The newest sushi bar is a little pricey, but the best in C-U.

JUPITER'S- from Sixth Street Journal - Microbrews, pool, and gourmet pizza in a cool renovated building. What else is there?

MIKE N' MOLLY'S- from Champaign County Visitor's Guide
Tucked away on Market street, Mike 'n Molly's has a beer garden and over 60 beers on their menu. Chalkboards are hung listing the beers w/ descriptions, producing country and price. Still have questions? Owner Mike Murphy hosts nightly and can recommend the perfect brew for you. DJs & Live Music (outside when possible).

PEKING GARDEN - from the CVS web site - Open Monday-Saturday 11am-10pm (lunch 11am-2pm), Sunday 12pm-10pm Peking Garden is a Mandarin/Szechwan restaurant named "Best Chinese" by the CU Cityview (formerly the Octopus) for the last 5 years.

PO BOYS - from the site, Railroad.net - Hot Times on the High Iron - Today, We Gotta Eat - One of my favorites is Po Boys. It is only open Fridays and Saturdays. They have a very small menu but it is outstanding barbeque including excellent ribs. I always choose the hot sauce which, like their others, is home made. It generally has a great kick to it.

SAM'S- from the Sixth Street Journal - A no-frills, quintessential greasy spoon.

THE GREAT IMPASTA- from Sixth Street Journal web page - Very creative traditional Northern Italian cuisine. $8-15 per person plus tax, tip.
